History

History is the study of events and people of the past.

At Astley C.E. Primary School, the History National Curriculum is taught through unit plans based on enquiry questions that inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Additionally, each class studies an aspect of our rich local history. The sequence of enquiry-led topics helps pupils to work as ‘history detectives’ who study and interpret primary and secondary sources. Through history, children learn to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

The display and reference to timelines throughout the school enables children to make connections between periods of history, comparing and contrasting civilisations to secure their concept of chronology. Historical vocabulary is mapped, displayed and taught throughout the school. We believe that the study of significant people through history is integral to understanding the past and its impact on the present. Therefore as part of our skills progression we have mapped the key individuals to be studied in each class.

High quality fiction and non-fiction texts are studied in each unit of work to provide a relevant and exciting context for learning. We link our learning in history to other curriculum areas, wherever possible.

Visits and visitors are an important part of many of our units of work, providing memorable experiences to inspire deeper learning.  They include ‘living history’ experience days, museum visits and elderly relatives talking about their childhood.
