Foreign Languages

Learning a Foreign Language (FL) supports the children’s understanding of living in a multi-cultural society, provides an opening to other cultures and fosters curiosity about our wider world.

At Astley C.E. Primary School, our aim is to encourage the pupils in Y3-6 to develop curiosity and intrigue in learning our chosen language and be able to communicate and express their ideas using listening, speaking and writing skills.

Through a range of opportunities and planned weekly sessions, children will understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. By the end of Key Stage 2, children would speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including discussion and asking relevant questions.

A clear progression plan for developing skills and knowledge of the language will enable children to continually improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation, along with their use of grammatical structures in their writing.

Through a culture of celebration, children will develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied and knowledge of the culture and countries where the language is used.
