P.E and Sport

P.E and Sport contribute to the health and wellbeing of all our pupils. We put physical activity and sport at the heart of our school and provide our pupils with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.

At Astley C.E Primary School, the P.E curriculum is taught through unit plans that build on sustained progression from EYFS through to year 6 following the PE national curriculum objectives. The curriculum is delivered following the areas of acquiring and developing skills, applying skills and using tactics and evaluating and improving performance. Through this progressive approach, year by year, their understanding, ability and confidence to perform will grow.

At Astley we want all children to enjoy sport and physical activity. We want them to be actively engaged in lessons and develop a lifelong love and understanding of the benefits of physical activity both to their physical and mental health. We promote the School Games Values: determination, passion, respect, honesty, self-belief and teamwork in our planning and teaching. We achieve this through our PE long-term planning.

All children are provided with 2 hours of curriculum PE time a week, plus opportunities to engage in extra-curricular PE and sport. In addition to this, we encourage active playtimes and active lunchtimes to ensure every child is getting their recommended 30 minutes of activity per day. Each day, the children take part in a daily mile and whole school ‘Wake up, Shake up.’  We provide opportunities for our children to compete in inter and intra school competitions regularly.
