Design and Technology

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject encouraging all pupils to think independently, solve problems and develop their creativity.

At Astley C.E. Primary School, the Design and Technology Curriculum is taught through unit plans that develop creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.

Each unit follows a clear learning cycle: research, design, make and evaluate, whilst also building upon their technical knowledge as they move through the school. Within cooking and nutrition children learn where food comes from and use the principles of a healthy and varied diet to prepare dishes. Deepening their knowledge of where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.

Alongside developing technical knowledge and understanding, children develop important design and technological skills that enable them to increasingly think creatively and as designers.

High quality fiction and non-fiction texts are always used within a unit of work to provide a relevant and exciting context for learning. We link our learning in Design and Technology to other subject areas, wherever possible.

Visits and visitors are an important part of our learning and enable the children to make links to how Design and Technology is prevalent in society today and their future aspirations within a STEM career. This includes STEM workshops, farm visits as well as gardening opportunities within our school grounds.
