Art and Design

Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

The aim of the art curriculum at Astley C.E. Primary School is to ensure that children are given the knowledge and skills necessary to express responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. While it is essentially a practical subject, Art and Design provides opportunities for reflection and children are encouraged to make critical responses to their own work and that of others.

At Astley CE Primary School, together with the aims of the National Curriculum, our teaching in Art and Design gives children opportunities to develop a love for all things creative using different media and progressively develop and use a range of skills involved in the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, colour, texture, pattern, shape and 3D form) through drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture. We want the children to become independent, self-critical learners and demonstrate a pride and enthusiasm in the creation and display of their own work.

Through our curriculum we want the children to gain an understanding of and be inspired by the work of inspirational artists and craftspeople, past and present, including inviting local artists to share their skills and inspire creativity along with visits to places where art can be enjoyed.
