Physical Education
Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.'

P.E and Sport

Intent
At Astley CE Primary School, we aim to develop pupils who are physically confident, active and understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Our PE curriculum provides opportunities for all children to develop fundamental movement skills, build resilience and experience a wide range of sports and physical activities.
We promote positive attitudes towards physical activity and encourage pupils to develop teamwork, sportsmanship and determination. Through PE, we support pupils’ physical development alongside their mental wellbeing.
Implementation
PE is taught through a structured programme that ensures progression in skills across all year groups. Pupils take part in a range of activities including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor learning.
Children have regular opportunities to develop both individual skills and teamwork through competitive and non-competitive activities. Where possible, learning is enhanced through participation in local sporting events, festivals and wider opportunities.
In addition, pupils take part in Forest School sessions, which support physical development alongside resilience, independence and problem-solving skills.
Swimming
At Astley CE Primary School, we believe that learning to swim is one of the most important life skills a child can develop. We therefore make a significant investment in ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to achieve this before they move on to high school.
All classes access 10 or more weeks of swimming lessons each year. These lessons are delivered by qualified swimming teachers, either employed by the school or provided by our current venue, Perdiswell Leisure Centre.
Pupils travel by coach to the venue and receive 30 minutes of high-quality swimming instruction each week during the programme.
Children who require additional support to meet the Department for Education expectations are offered further opportunities to continue developing their swimming skills.
Parents are asked to contribute towards the cost of coach travel. Information, including lesson dates and associated costs, is shared with parents in advance of each programme.

School Games Gold Award
We are proud to have achieved the School Games Gold Award, recognising our commitment to providing high-quality physical education and a wide range of sporting opportunities for all pupils.
This award reflects our dedication to promoting participation, inclusion and competition, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to develop their skills, represent the school and enjoy being physically active.

Achieving the Gold Award demonstrates our ongoing commitment to excellence in physical education and school sport.

Impact
Through our PE curriculum, pupils develop confidence in physical activity, improved coordination and a strong understanding of the importance of health and wellbeing.
By the end of Year 6, pupils are equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead active lifestyles and, where possible, meet national expectations for swimming. Pupils also demonstrate teamwork, resilience and a positive attitude towards physical activity that will support them beyond primary school.
